MATÍAS ERCOLE

Matías Ercole’s works stem from the certainty that drawing is capable of turning visible that which is not. Even from his early charcoal murals and first figurative sgraffitoes, he’s always been exploring the idea of images as a reality gifted of independent existence, whose elements can be broken down. In his pieces, usually large-scaled, line, light and clippings appear not as way of representation, but as symptoms of energy in motion. A sort of sensible evidence of the strength operating in the backstage of apparent mimesis. His shapeless compositions and bleak landscapes makes us think about the dusk light of sublime romantic scenes; or the organic feel of the American baroque; but above all, the intensity of religious painting. Hold with hanging iron structures, lighted by reflectors, placed as frescoes, it is not possible to break apart Ercole’s visual works from their context and devices with which they are shown. Revealing the dependence of images to architecture, in a theatrical way that give his drawings a never before seen power.
